Name: Bilbo Baggins.
Canon: The Hobbit; There & Back Again.
Original or Alternate Universe: Original.
Canon Point: Ending of chapter nine; Barrels Out of Bond.
Number: 153.
Setting:
Taking place in Middle Earth, more specifically Tolkien's world-building and the people who inhabit it. It is a place of hobbits, dwarves, wizards, orcs—you name it. It is a world of wars and customs, so very different than our idea of the modern world. Wikipedia has a very in-depth explanation of the large stretch for Middle Earth.
History:
We begin with Tolkien’s unforgotten words, ‘IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND there lived a hobbit.’
Bilbo Baggins’ life was very hobbit-routine: Eat, enjoy your pipe, read your morning letters, eat some more, and rest for the next exciting day. The hobbit life is a humble one, adventures aren’t called for and doing so means a great loss of respect. Being the only son to Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took, Bilbo lived humbly in routine until his Tookish blood responded to the call for adventure. It began with a sudden visit from Gandalf the Grey, a wizard known by many and most fondly by Bilbo. In his search for another companion in adventure, Bilbo Baggins was recruited into the wizard’s company and thirteen other dwarves. It took persuasion, but the song of the dwarves about their long lost treasure and home sealed the deal. Bilbo Baggins joins their journey and acts as their ‘burglar’ to the Lonely Mountain where the dreaded beast, Smaug, sits in claim of what they have lost.
The beginning of their adventure is a miserable mess, leaving in such hurry and the party eventually loses a part of their supplies. Upon seeing a nearby campfire in the dark of the forest, the dwarves send their burglar to investigate. Thankfully, Bilbo is quiet and unseen to what turns out to be three nasty trolls. The peace remains only for a moment and there is a big mess: Bilbo is caught, escapes, and each of the dwarves are caught! In hiding without an idea for rescue, Gandalf arrives in time with a trick up his sleeve. The trolls are carried into an argument until the break of day, turning into stone. The party is freed and they gather the abandoned possessions of the trolls. Bilbo equips himself with a small dagger he later names Sting.
The journey continues and they are able to rest for a short time in Rivendell. Here, Thorin & Company discover more from their map to help them along the Misty Mountains and their final destination. Meeting a terrible storm, they take another short rest in a cave within the mountains. Of course, this is a grave mistake! Everyone except the wizard is caught by goblins on Front Porch. They’re brought to a terrible foe known as the Great Goblin, all seeming well until he reacts to Thorin’s sword. His sword and Gandalf’s alike are known and feared, sending the Great Goblin into a rage. For the second time in a row, the party is saved by Gandalf. The Great Goblin is killed and there is a nasty uproar with the remaining goblins. In middle of their grand escape, Bilbo is knocked out and accidentally left behind.
Bilbo wakes to find himself in darkness. He carries on his own while trying to give himself courage, but is shocked to find the attention of a strange creature known as Gollum. Gollum speaks in hisses and harsh whispers to his ‘precious,’ but what is his ‘precious?’ Well, the two engage themselves in a game of riddles. If Bilbo should win, Gollum will lead the hobbit to safety. If Bilbo loses, he will be eaten. Easy as that. At the end and barely hanging in panic, Bilbo asks: “What have I got in my pocket?” The strange question stumps Gollum and he cannot correctly guess what is in the hobbit’s pocket. In fact, it turns out to be the creature’s ‘precious!’ Bilbo absent-mindedly took a ring he found while wandering in the darkness, long before their meeting and their fateful game of riddles. Gollum loses, but he is deceptive. Hoping to trick the hobbit, he returns to his small island to retrieve the Ring, his precious and kill the hobbit, but finds nothing. Gollum is quick to suspect Bilbo and sends him in a chase. The precious luck of the Ring saves Bilbo’s life—it grants him invisibility and he is able to slip away unnoticed.
Bilbo rejoins the rest of his party for more trouble since they can never catch a break. They are pursued by wargs and goblins after the rageful death of the Great Goblin. They are able to stall until they saved by the Lord of the Eagles, taken away into safety and eventually meeting the comfort of Beorn, a being who can change their skin. They are offered rest, advice, and supplies until the journey resumes once more.
Can you guess what happens next? Can you?
Thorin & co. are left in Mirkwood without the aid of their wizard, so they take their chances looking atop the trees and seeing where they stand. The sighting of small spiders hunting is almost like an omen, but they continue. Upon the discovery of elves within the forest, the party tries to meet them for help. Once again, there is darkness and chaos. Giant spiders capture the party and only Bilbo is able to escape with his use of Sting. Bilbo smartly uses the Ring and his teasing to lead the ambush of giant spiders away. The dwarves are freed, but Thorin is nowhere to be seen.
So, where is Thorin? Well, it turns out has been captured by Wood-elves, and so are the rest of the dwarves, except Bilbo and his wonderful Ring. Uncertain what else to do, Bilbo follows them into the place of the Elven King. It turns out the king isn’t entirely kind to the dwarves’ agenda and has them imprisoned. After much sitting and hiding, Bilbo devises a plan: Each of the dwarves will be placed into empty wine barrels and pushed down into the river for their daring escape. All is well and the dwarves are able to escape without anyone knowing, but what about Bilbo?! He is the last to leap into the river, uncertain of his fate...
Personality:"To say that Bilbo's breath was taken away is no description at all."
Bilbo Baggins started out as any other hobbit—quiet. Hobbits are humble and peaceful beings; they possess a hearty sort of laugh that is without worry or worldly concern. He lived in good wealth, good comfort, and good food as any hobbit hole can offer. Despite the routine of it all, he bears the blood of the Took line. They are known to be adventurous souls, reaching out into the world and grasping infinite wonders. As for Bilbo, well, he grew up to be nothing like these relatives. He blended in, but it was a matter of time before his inner Took would be shouting out.
He is more of a Took than he realizes. He has a fascination with maps and other great things, but they are usually shaken away with a grumble or ‘no, you should not be thinking that!’ The hobbit has grown accustomed to his chair, his kettle, and a number of things—he enjoys the idea of returning to it every now and then. He craves for home in small bursts. His mix of blood leaves him in arguments with himself, to throw himself into dangers that he couldn’t possibly imagine himself in. Thrown with Thorin and his party of dwarves, Bilbo takes risks and actually surprises himself. When things are most frightful or most grim, that is when he is really brave. One should never give up, but perhaps sit and organize their options. What can be done? Bilbo does not prefer rushing into things, but he is willing to give anything good thought. He is a thinker.
Well, if he has trouble making Tookish decisions, what draws him into this adventure? If anything, it is the song of the dwarves. They sing of their lost home and treasures while Bilbo seems to float off into an entirely new world, a world of new rather than old. He knows how to listen and feel for others, their pains and troubles he has never come close to sharing. The adventure of a Took is inside him, speaking to him in whispers and granting him courage when the timing is right. The journey to the Lonely Mountain or any other will always have his true self, being a simple hobbit from Bag's End—a simple hobbit from Bag's End who can be brave.
Brave AND a thinker, but can he be fast on his feet? He is something close to an expert burglar. … Okay, not exactly, but he has enough confidence with himself to test his limits. The party’s commotion with the trolls started when Bilbo was caught stealing from one of their pockets, unfortunately given away by the purse’s noise. He gives into his role as burglar and uses it to his best advantage. Such wit saves them all until the end of their adventure, to the giant spiders and to his game with Gollum, and it never does him any wrong. He becomes very aware of himself, being a hobbit with a sword ( dagger, but sword to him ) with a plan. If it means helping everyone in danger, then so be it. If it gets everyone off his back, so be it.
This reveals that Bilbo wants to be treated with the same respect as everyone else. He gives respect, so he expects the same in return. He is mildly irritated at the behaviors of others time and time again, holding his breath as the dwarves don’t thank him for their meals right away. Shouting or overreacting is just silly to a hobbit, so he does his best to keep collected. His overall manner becomes serious and business-like when he wants to reach the same height as everyone else, not physically, but has a voice that demands the same treatment.
Still, he is kind and enjoys a good conversation. Company is welcomed and so is a friend. New ones, hobbits or not hobbits, anyone willing for chit-chat is wonderful in his book. Rather than a party, he can call the members of Thorin & Co. his friends. Bilbo slowly begins to prove himself in their eyes, willing to take the leap for another. Be wonderful to him and Bilbo will extraordinary to you, simple as that.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
°’… Hobbits can move quietly… They take pride in it.’
One of the main reasons Bilbo is recruited by Gandalf is that hobbits are almost undetectable in their tread. Hobbits aren’t in need of any shoes and can easily hide, sneak, weasel around—you get the point.
°’The hobbit was a very well-to-do hobbit, and his name was Baggins.’
Bilbo Baggins is a proud hobbit. He takes interest in cooking, maps, and riddles. They are fine things that make him more average than most, but he is well rounded.
°‘Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did.’
He does have courage, but a hobbit is a hobbit and a man is simply a man. He has very little skill in fighting or anything violent. He is small, small, perhaps fragile—but he is quick to think and rely on the inner Took to keep alive and striving.
°’He put the ring in his pocket almost without thinking; certainly it did not seem of any particular use at the moment.’
His ring is one of his prized possessions, but his obsession and attachment is extremely weak at his canon point. The ring grants him invisibility and that’s as far as it goes for him. It can be easily removed and dropped just as Bilbo has taken it from Gollum. He uses it to escape tricky situations and possesses a sword that glows when goblins are near ( not that he would ever actually need it in space, but who knows? ).

IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filed with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.
And comfort is out for a long stroll as Bilbo Baggins is on his own, more of a stumble and tumble with a barrel ride out of their most recent situation, another tale to tell, another chapter to go on scribbling. There are many, many years for that, many more troubles to be had and passed onto one Frodo Baggins, cousin to nephew to more delicately, Dearest Frodo. For now, it's quietened, a finger to our lips as we pass along to the next page:
Burglaring and being the prime problem-solver of the day—all very tiring for one hobbit, yet we have reached the point of promise from the Luckwearer. Feet pressing hard into his ground, stubborn for a mountain to be reclaimed, dwarves to be resettled and finished with their very own 'and that means comfort.'
Now, imagine the surprise when a hobbit finds himself here, of all places. Now, imagine the surprise when a hobbit finds himself here, as a hobbit ( somewhere beyond your maps can even follow ), of all places! Quite difficult, describing 'here.' There's discomfort from the strange substance stringing around his body, Bilbo picks at it until it creates a web at his fingers. There is a quiet sigh from the poor hobbit, hopefully mistaken as the sigh of an unsneaky hobbit. Next, he decides on a dazed crawl and fumble for something of familiarity, met with a groan. ( 'Not a thing!' ) Carrying along, a quiet crouch and cower for the nearest idea of shelter. ( 'This is all very indecent.' ) Bright eyes peer for an option, a route to be taken. ( 'My, not even a slither of cover. Ring or not, I would very much like handkerchief or the corner of one, for manners to be spared!' )
Bilbo Baggins is blessed with another adventure and yet again, without his pocket-handkerchief. Here, he does not think this as cowering. Instead, Bilbo Baggins is simply thinking.

Bilbo Baggins, at your service!
[ That squeak surely must have scratched at your ear, friend! Well, it turns out to be sourced to one particular hobbit, the very same Bilbo Baggins peering through the screen. Peering into forever? No, he is looking for his audience, but his words carry on and float. They spin and meet into one smoky ring, puffed through a pipe tangled in his fingers. There is a visible calm patting into the wrinkles of his face, perhaps from earlier stress.
Still, the chirp in his voice smooths out his expression into something friendly. In fact, he is sharing a cheeky smile to his no-face audience, hoping for the same kindness. ]
I am in need of help finding my company. [ He clears his throat, stuck between a tone that is business-like and relaxed. He shouldn't be too relaxed, of course not! ] Dwarves, thirteen in count, but I will gladly send my thanks and offerings to any that may be found. I do admit losing my way, someone to call familiar would put my concerns and my inner tremble to rest.
[
Yes, the broadcast carries on without any movement, but a few hints of sound. Perhaps someday he will have a proper understanding of the 'on' and 'off' options. Perhaps. ]
